It was a hot and steamy night. The temperature had hit a brain melting 106 degrees Fahrenheit that day and the night showed no signs of being much of a break. The heat required an immediate beverage purchase and I quickly dropped off Aileen at our second row seats and took off in search of Budweiser Selects and a diet coke for her. John Mayer came back out shirtless in a look that could best be described as Plumber Chic and proceeded to tear into a self indulgent set of These Jams are Just for Me...come along for the ride. He gave very little in the way of Radio hits and after opening with the radio friendly “Waiting on the World to Change” and the make the girls scream “Why Georgia” he got to the these jams are just for me part of the show. That was basically the rest of the night. The show took a quick turn as he left his soulful troubadour persona behind put on his blues ax-man one and covered Eric Clapton’s Crossroads. Mr. Mayer makes a habit of covering Ray Charles, Jimmy Hendrix, the aforementioned Slowhand, and Stevie Ray Vaughan so this was really no surprise to us die hard fans. He played plenty of John Mayer Trio tunes; tunes made more meaty by his fully instrumented band which included keyboards and a two man horn section. Tunes such as “I Don’t Trust Myself with Loving You” and “I’m Gonna Find Another You”. During the song, “Wheel” he took a verse from U2, of all bands, and threw a little “Still haven’t found What I’m Looking For” into the chorus. He wowed the audience toward the end of the show, by pulling out a song on which he collaborated with Herbie Hancock on Herbie’s “Opportunities” CD. “Stitched Up” brought the crowd to its feet as he closed the show with a show stopping rendition of Gravity on which Colbie Caillat returned the earlier favor and lent the song her sweet voice. The crowd basically went nuts and John reemerged to an Encore of another more meaty version of a JMTrio tune “Vultures” and one last radio nod, “Say”.
